SVARASANGA VANNAMA

This is a work for full Orchestra,Piano and Sri Lankan Drums.

It is interesting to note that Ravibandhu Vidyapathy made his debut with a Symphony Orchestra at the opening performance of this work.

The Colombo Symphony Orchestra which performed the piece was conducted by Dr. Earl de Foseka (29th of May 1992, at the Ladies College Auditorium). The Colombo Symphony Orchestra is now known as theSymphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, or the SOSL.

The Piano was played by Sri Lankan classical pianist Ramya de Livera Perera.

Harsha Makalande’s Svarasanga Vannama had it’s Japanese premier on the 4th of October 2007, at the Tokyo Opera City, as part of the Asia Orchestra Week. Here the composer/pianist is seen rehearsing with Maestro Hikotaro Yazaki.

It was originally conducted by Dr. Earl de Fonseka of the Sri Lanka Symphony Orchestra, on the 29th of May, 1992 at Colombo, with Ramya de Livera (Piano), and Ravibandhu Vidyapathi (Getabera) as soloists. The Tokyo performance was with the India-Sri Lanka Goodwill Orchestra.

New arrangements of John de Silva ever greens, will be done by Harsha Makalande.

John de Silva was one of the greatest playwrights Sri Lanka ever produced. His sytle of play was known as 'Nurti'. Music had an important role to play in his creations, and the Music of Sri Lanka benefited immensely by what came out of these productions. The music was composed by the brilliant Indian musician Vishvanath Louji, at the request of John de Silva. Though these events took place nearly a hundred years before, today Sri Lankan Pop and Rap Musicians too have benefited by compositions such as Siri Sanghabo or Sirisanga bodi (Sirisangabodi) as it is now known.

Harsha Makalalande started studying Western Classical music (the Piano as his instrument) at the age of six under Mrs. Chitrani Balasuriya. Even at this young age he was attracted to Pop Music, Jazz Standards, Sri Lankan Folk, Pop, Baila, and Indian music. The exposure to Indian music came mainly through the influence of Sam Makalandage Silva (a grand uncle) who was a friend of Rabindranath Tagore. The influence of Sinhala poetry, which was brought about by his mother’s father, VD de Lanerolle (a Sinhala poet of extraordinary stature), created a lasting impression on him to look for a ‘Sri Lankan Sound’. VD de Lanerolle had been, by profession a qualified English teacher, and a former editor of Lankadeepaya (a Sinhala News paper). Most mornings, on the days when Makalande lived at his grand father’s house at Kaduwela, he heard Victor de Lanerolle reciting poetry at three in the morning! He had the practice of reciting while he created and wrote hundreds of Sinhala poems and stories for children and adults. The Samudraghosha (the sound of the sea) Viritha (style) in which he sang was the base used in Makalande’s film music compositions. Sometimes he would listen to the Prith or Pirith Ose .This consists of three notes roughly seperated by a tone, and a semi-tone. His second teacher, Mrs. Ann Makalande Perera, who was one of his father’s younger sisters played Western Classical music, as well as Show tunes, Jazz Standards in the style of Charley Kuntz, etc. ………Please go to PROFILE to see the rest……..

The Music of Sri Lanka

Part 1

The Music of the Nurti.

The music of the Nurti (or Nurthi, pronounced noorthi) in Sri Lanka, played an important part in building up the musical taste of the average Sri lankan. Proctor John de Silva, and Charles Dias were two great exponents of this art form. John de Silva worked with the talented Indian musician Vishvanath Louji, who composed the music for his plays.

In his book, "The History of Proctor John de Silva Dramatic Literature", LDA Ratnayaka, a contemporary of John de Silva gives vivid accounts from the artistic life of this national hero. Written in Sinhala, the book begins with a list of all the works by the playwright.......
